Can Your MacBook Pro Run Two External Monitors?
The short answer is yes for most models, no for a few, and "yes, but" for one in particular.
Base M1 and M2 MacBook Pro — One Display Only
The base M1 and M2 chips natively support one external display. No Thunderbolt dock — from FusionDock or anyone else — can add a second independent native display to these machines.
A dual-monitor setup is possible through DisplayLink, which uses software and USB data to create additional screens. This requires installing the DisplayLink Manager driver. FusionDock's current lineup uses native display output only — none of the four Thunderbolt models offers DisplayLink. Base M3 MacBook Pro — Two Displays, Lid Closed
Apple gave the base M3 chip a second display engine, but it only activates when the MacBook's lid is closed, under documented conditions.
To use dual external monitors with a base M3 MacBook Pro:

If Your MacBook Pro Has a Base M1 or M2 Chip
No current FusionDock product can provide two independent native external displays on a base M1 or M2 MacBook Pro. All four Thunderbolt models — Pro 3, Max 1, Max 2, and Ultra — use native display output. A native dock cannot increase the host Mac's native external-display limit.
Your path to dual monitors is a DisplayLink dock or adapter. These use software to create additional displays over USB data, bypassing the hardware ceiling. You'll need to install the DisplayLink Manager driver.

Step-by-Step: How to Set Up Dual Monitors on MacBook Pro
Once you've confirmed your chip and chosen a dock, the macOS setup is the same across models.
Step 1 — Plug In Your Hardware
Connect your dock to the MacBook Pro first (one cable for Pro 3, two for Max 1, Max 2, or Ultra). Then connect both monitors to the dock using the appropriate cables — Thunderbolt, USB-C, HDMI, or DisplayPort, depending on your monitors and dock.
If using direct cables without a dock, connect monitors straight to the Mac. For a MacBook Pro with an HDMI port, one display can use HDMI and the other USB-C.
Step 2 — Open macOS Display Settings

Using Clamshell Mode (Lid Closed)
For most M-series MacBook Pro models, closing the lid doesn't change how many external displays you can use. The exception is the base M3, where closed-lid mode is required for dual monitors.
To use clamshell mode on any MacBook Pro:

Mixing 4K, 5K, and 6K Monitors
macOS supports independent resolution and scaling per display in mixed-resolution configurations. You can run a 4K display next to a 6K display, and each will use its own settings. The dock and Mac don't require matched monitors.
High-resolution displays like 5K or 6K consume more display bandwidth. Verify your monitor, cable, and dock combination against the published specifications before assuming a given resolution and refresh rate.
When You Need an Adapter

Troubleshooting Common Dual-Monitor Issues
Monitor Not Detected
Reseat both ends of the cable. Try a different port on the dock. Confirm the monitor is on the correct input source. For dual-cable docks (Max 1, Max 2, Ultra), confirm both host cables are connected — one cable alone won't activate the full architecture.
If the monitor still doesn't appear, check System Settings > Displays and hold the Option key — a "Detect Displays" button appears in place of Night Shift. Click it to force macOS to rescan.
Second Monitor Shows the Same Screen (Mirroring)
