Most M-series MacBook Pro models can drive two external monitors. A few cannot. Which camp yours falls into comes down to one thing — the chip inside.


If you have a base M1 or M2 MacBook Pro, the native limit is one external display, and no Thunderbolt dock changes that. A base M3 MacBook Pro handles two, but only with the lid shut and under specific conditions. Every other chip — M4, M5, M1 Pro through M5 Pro, and all Max variants — supports two or more displays natively. For those Macs, the question shifts from "can I?" to "which dock and cables do I need?"

Before You Start: Check Your MacBook Pro Chip

Open the Apple menu and select About This Mac. The chip name appears directly under the macOS version — something like "Apple M2 Pro" or "Apple M4 Max."

Can Your MacBook Pro Run Two External Monitors?

The short answer is yes for most models, no for a few, and "yes, but" for one in particular.

Base M1 and M2 MacBook Pro — One Display Only

The base M1 and M2 chips natively support one external display. No Thunderbolt dock — from FusionDock or anyone else — can add a second independent native display to these machines.

A dual-monitor setup is possible through DisplayLink, which uses software and USB data to create additional screens. This requires installing the DisplayLink Manager driver. FusionDock's current lineup uses native display output only — none of the four Thunderbolt models offers DisplayLink. For base M1 and M2 users, a software-assisted USB graphics solution such as DisplayLink can provide a second display.

Base M3 MacBook Pro — Two Displays, Lid Closed

Apple gave the base M3 chip a second display engine, but it only activates when the MacBook's lid is closed, under documented conditions.

To use dual external monitors with a base M3 MacBook Pro:

  • macOS Sonoma 14.6 or later
  • External keyboard and mouse or trackpad connected
  • The MacBook plugged into power
  • Connect the first display before closing the lid
  • Close the lid
  • Connect the second display after the lid is closed

Opening the lid while both external displays are active may cause the second display to disconnect. That's expected behavior, not a defect.

Base M4 and M5 MacBook Pro — Two Displays, No Restrictions

Starting with the M4 generation, Apple removed the lid-closed restriction for base chips. You can run two external monitors with the MacBook open or shut.

M1–M4 Pro MacBook Pro — Two Displays, Straightforward

Every Pro-tier chip from M1 Pro through M4 Pro supports two external displays at up to 6K resolution and 60Hz. There are no lid-closed tricks to worry about.

FusionDock Pro 3 is the primary recommendation. FusionDock Max 1 (Thunderbolt 4, dual-cable) is an alternative with more downstream ports.

M5 Pro MacBook Pro — Three Displays, but Dual Is Still Simple

The M5 Pro chip supports up to three external monitors. For a dual-monitor desk, FusionDock Pro 3 works on a compatible Mac that natively supports two displays — its product ceiling is two. The Three Ways to Connect Dual Monitors to a MacBook Pro

Method 1 — Direct Cables (No Dock)

On MacBook Pro models that natively support two external displays, you can connect both monitors directly to the Mac—using two Thunderbolt/USB-C connections, or one HDMI connection and one Thunderbolt/USB-C connection. A DisplayPort monitor requires a USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable or adapter, and any USB-C cable must support video output. This setup works, but it means reconnecting multiple cables whenever you sit down or leave. It is usually the lowest-cost option, but also the least tidy.

Method 2 — Single-Cable Thunderbolt Dock

One Thunderbolt cable connects the Mac to the dock. The dock handles both monitors, plus Ethernet, USB peripherals, storage, and charging. If Your MacBook Pro Has a Base M1 or M2 Chip

No current FusionDock product can provide two independent native external displays on a base M1 or M2 MacBook Pro. All four Thunderbolt models — Pro 3, Max 1, Max 2, and Ultra — use native display output. A native dock cannot increase the host Mac's native external-display limit.

Your path to dual monitors is a DisplayLink dock or adapter. These use software to create additional displays over USB data, bypassing the hardware ceiling. You'll need to install the DisplayLink Manager driver.

Step-by-Step: How to Set Up Dual Monitors on MacBook Pro

Once you've confirmed your chip and chosen a dock, the macOS setup is the same across models.

Step 1 — Plug In Your Hardware

Connect your dock to the MacBook Pro first (one cable for Pro 3, two for Max 1, Max 2, or Ultra). Then connect both monitors to the dock using the appropriate cables — Thunderbolt, USB-C, HDMI, or DisplayPort, depending on your monitors and dock.

If using direct cables without a dock, connect monitors straight to the Mac. For a MacBook Pro with an HDMI port, one display can use HDMI and the other USB-C.

Step 2 — Open macOS Display Settings

Go to System Settings > Displays. Both monitors should appear as separate tiles. If one doesn't show up, check the cable connection and the monitor's input source first.

Step 3 — Arrange Your Monitors

Click the Arrange button. Drag the blue rectangles to match the physical layout on your desk — left monitor on the left, right monitor on the right — so cursor movement between screens feels natural.

Step 4 — Set Resolution and Refresh Rate

Select each display. Under Resolution, choose "Scaled" and pick the resolution that matches your monitor's native spec. Under Refresh Rate, confirm it matches your monitor's capability.

Step 5 — Choose Your Main Display and Arrange Monitors

In System Settings > Displays, click Arrange. Drag the display icons to match the physical layout on your desk. To set the main display, select the monitor you want as primary from the display list and use the "Use as" dropdown to choose "Main display."

Special Cases: Clamshell Mode, Different Resolutions, and Adapters

Using Clamshell Mode (Lid Closed)

For most M-series MacBook Pro models, closing the lid doesn't change how many external displays you can use. The exception is the base M3, where closed-lid mode is required for dual monitors.

To use clamshell mode on any MacBook Pro:


  • Connect an external keyboard and mouse or trackpad
  • Plug the Mac into power
  • Close the lid
  • The external displays should remain active


If a display goes dark when you close the lid, confirm that external peripherals and power are connected. macOS needs both to stay active with the lid shut.

Mixing 4K, 5K, and 6K Monitors

macOS supports independent resolution and scaling per display in mixed-resolution configurations. You can run a 4K display next to a 6K display, and each will use its own settings. The dock and Mac don't require matched monitors.

High-resolution displays like 5K or 6K consume more display bandwidth. Verify your monitor, cable, and dock combination against the published specifications before assuming a given resolution and refresh rate.

When You Need an Adapter

FusionDock Pro 3 has no built-in HDMI or DisplayPort. If your monitors use those inputs, you'll need USB-C to HDMI or USB-C to DisplayPort adapters or cables.

FusionDock Max 1 includes two HDMI 2.0 ports plus downstream USB-C display paths. Max 2 includes one HDMI 2.0 port plus three downstream USB-C display paths. Ultra adds a DisplayPort 2.1 port. Use certified Thunderbolt or USB-C cables for the highest-resolution setups.

Connecting One Monitor via HDMI and One via Thunderbolt

For docks with HDMI ports (Max 1, Max 2, Ultra), you can run one display over HDMI and the other over a downstream USB-C port. For Pro 3, both displays connect through downstream Thunderbolt ports — use USB-C to HDMI or DisplayPort adapters if your monitors don't accept USB-C directly.

Troubleshooting Common Dual-Monitor Issues

Monitor Not Detected

Reseat both ends of the cable. Try a different port on the dock. Confirm the monitor is on the correct input source. For dual-cable docks (Max 1, Max 2, Ultra), confirm both host cables are connected — one cable alone won't activate the full architecture.

If the monitor still doesn't appear, check System Settings > Displays and hold the Option key — a "Detect Displays" button appears in place of Night Shift. Click it to force macOS to rescan.

Second Monitor Shows the Same Screen (Mirroring)

Go to System Settings > Displays. Under "Use as," confirm it's set to "Extended display" rather than "Mirror for [display name]." macOS sometimes defaults to mirroring when it detects a new display.

Wrong Resolution or Refresh Rate

System Settings > Displays > select the monitor > set Resolution to "Scaled" and pick the native resolution. Set the refresh rate to match your monitor's spec. If the correct resolution isn't listed, the cable may not support the required bandwidth — try a certified Thunderbolt or USB-C cable rated for your target resolution and refresh rate.

Display Flickers or Disconnects After Sleep/Wake

A cable or power issue is a common cause. Try a higher-quality Thunderbolt or USB-C cable. Confirm your dock is receiving adequate power from its adapter. Also check that you're running a current macOS version and that dock firmware is up to date. If the issue persists, contact iVANKY support.
