Choosing a dock for an M5 MacBook Pro isn't just about how many screens you plan to connect. Your chip determines your ceiling — base M5 supports two external displays, M5 Pro supports three, M5 Max supports four. But display count alone doesn't tell you which dock you need. The screening rule stays the same: your usable display count through any dock equals the smaller of your chip's native limit and the dock's validated ceiling. Not every dual-display desk is the same. Before comparing docks, identify which kind of setup you're building.

Everyday desk: Two displays — a 4K or 5K main monitor and a secondary screen for reference, communication, or tools. Moderate storage needs, standard peripherals. This is the most common MacBook Pro setup.

For Most Desks: Pro 3

If your setup is straightforward — two displays with standard peripherals, nothing bandwidth-intensive — FusionDock Pro 3 is the right choice. One Thunderbolt 5 cable. Both monitors. Storage. Network. Charging. All through a single connection.

Pro 3 is an 11-in-1 Thunderbolt 5 dock: three downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports, 2.5GbE, an SD 4.0 UHS-II card reader, three USB-A ports, and 140W host charging. No built-in HDMI or DisplayPort — monitors that don't connect over Thunderbolt or USB-C will need an adapter. Passive cooling, no moving parts, nothing to hear.

On an M5 Pro MacBook Pro, Pro 3 can drive up to three displays through its three Thunderbolt 5 downstream ports. On M5 Max, it can reach four through a daisy-chain setup — connect one monitor to a downstream Thunderbolt port, then chain a second monitor from that monitor's Thunderbolt downstream port (your display must explicitly support Thunderbolt daisy-chaining for this to work). These higher display counts require the right cables and monitor combinations; the value is that Pro 3 can grow with your desk, even though its real strength stays in the streamlined, single-cable dual-display experience.

For base M5 MacBook Pro owners, your chip tops out at two displays. Pro 3 matches that ceiling without asking you to pay for capacity you won't use.

Dual Displays, More Power: Max 2 & Ultra

Two displays doesn't automatically mean simple. If you're running two 6K monitors, moving large media files over a wired network, or working with high-speed external storage while displays are active, you need more bandwidth and I/O than the entry-level provides — even with just two screens.

FusionDock Max 2 is the step up. Twenty-three ports, 140W charging, 2.5GbE, active cooling. It uses a Thunderbolt 5 controller plus a dedicated DP Alt Mode chip to handle simultaneous display and data traffic. A built-in HDMI 2.0 port eliminates one adapter. On M5 Pro, Max 2 supports up to three displays; on M5 Max, up to four. The dual-USB-C host connection uses a magnetic snap-together design at the MacBook end, so both connectors seat as one unit — connecting and disconnecting is a single action.

The bandwidth is 40Gbps (Thunderbolt 4) rather than 80‑120Gbps (Thunderbolt 5), and host charging is 96W versus 140W. For workflows that don't push against Thunderbolt 4's limits — and many don't — Max 1 covers two to four displays with the virtues of fanless silence and built-in HDMI. Three Displays: Max 2 or Ultra

Three external displays requires M5 Pro or M5 Max — base M5 MacBook Pro can't drive a third screen natively.

Max 2 is the most practical three-display recommendation. Three displays on M5 Pro through three USB-C ports, or two USB-C plus HDMI. Twenty-three ports, 140W charging, 2.5GbE. Covers the I/O most multi-display desks need without pushing into flagship territory.

Ultra steps up when networking demands it. Three displays on M5 Pro through any three of six rear outputs. The differentiator is 10GbE: if your workflow streams from a high-speed NAS, that alone makes Ultra the better fit. Without 10GbE needs, Max 2 is the cleaner three-display choice.

Four Displays and 10GbE: Ultra

Four external displays requires M5 Max. Both Max 2 and Ultra reach this count on that chip. The decision is networking and I/O.

Max 2 supports four on M5 Max through three USB-C plus HDMI or an approved daisy-chain. Twenty-three ports, 2.5GbE, 140W. Enough for most four-display desks.

Ultra adds 10GbE, 26 ports, 45W peripheral PD, and dual-fan cooling alongside four displays through any four of six rear outputs. If your desk needs the networking capacity — NAS, large transfers, multi-user environments — Ultra earns the step up. If noise matters and you don't need 10GbE, Max 2 is the quieter path to four screens.
