The M5 Pro drives three external displays. The M5 Max drives four. And both can push that many over a single Thunderbolt port using a supported hub or daisy-chained displays — a change from the two-display-per-port limit Apple documents for earlier Apple-silicon MacBook Pro generations. Within those native limits, you don't need DisplayLink. This guide explains what changed in Apple's documented display limits, why "Thunderbolt 5 has more bandwidth" is only half the story, and which dock architecture really runs three or four screens.
What changed with M5 Pro and M5 Max?
The old single-port limit on earlier MacBook Pro models
For earlier Apple-silicon MacBook Pro generations, the pattern was more restrictive at the port level. Apple documents that M2 Max and M3 Max MacBook Pro models can drive up to four external displays in total, but no more than two through a single Thunderbolt port. Reaching four displays therefore required using more than one Mac output path rather than relying on one Thunderbolt port alone. A conventional native dock couldn't increase that per-port ceiling.
That held through the M4 generation too. Apple's own support document is blunt about it: an M4 Max supports four external displays, yet "using a supported hub or daisy-chaining displays can enable up to 2 displays over a single Thunderbolt port."
So raw Thunderbolt link bandwidth alone can't explain the change. Something in the host-side display implementation also changed.
M5 Pro: up to three displays from one Thunderbolt port
The M5 Pro MacBook Pro supports up to three external displays. Apple now documents that a supported hub or daisy-chaining displays can enable up to three of those over a single Thunderbolt port.
In other words, an M5 Pro user can get a clean three-display desk without the multi-port gymnastics that older chips demanded.
M5 Max: up to four displays from one Thunderbolt port
The M5 Max goes further. It supports four external displays, and Apple states a single Thunderbolt port can carry **up to four** of them with a supported hub or daisy-chained displays.
That's the headline change: the per-port limit doubled, from two to four, on the top chip.
Your Mac has two different display ceilings
This is where most of the confusion lives. A Mac has two separate limits, and they're easy to collapse into one.
Total native external-display ceiling
The first limit is how many external displays the chip can drive at all. Base M1/M2: one. Base M3: one with the lid open, or up to two with the lid closed. Base M4/M5: two. M5 Pro: three. M5 Max: four.
Single-Thunderbolt-port display ceiling
The second limit is how many of those displays can travel through *one* Thunderbolt port. And here's the cleanest way to see the change:

An M4 Max could drive four displays but needed more than one port to do it. An M5 Max drives four — and can get all four through one port. The total didn't change on the Max; what changed is how many screens one port can carry.
Thunderbolt 5 alone doesn't explain the change
It's tempting to credit Thunderbolt 5 and move on. That explanation doesn't hold up.
What Apple confirms
Apple's display-support documentation tells us the outcome: M5 Pro supports three external displays, M5 Max supports four, and each can run that count over one Thunderbolt port using a supported hub or daisy-chained displays. Apple also confirms the M4 Pro and M4 Max — which already had Thunderbolt 5 — kept the earlier per-port behavior. M4 Max has Thunderbolt 5 and a four-display ceiling, yet its per-port count stayed at two.
Apple's MacBook Pro tech specs add one more relevant detail for the M5 Max: its Thunderbolt 5 ports support native DisplayPort 2.1 speeds. That shows the port-side video capability is part of the picture — but it still doesn't, by itself, explain the change in per-port display count.
Apple does not publish a detailed internal architecture explanation for the M5 change. We know the result; we don't have Apple's official account of the mechanism.
A clue inside macOS: community IORegistry evidence
Independent Mac users have dug into macOS's own device tree — the IORegistry — and shared what they found. In it, each Thunderbolt controller exposes entries named `AppleThunderboltDPInAdapterOS2`. Community contributors read the count of these entries as a clue to how many DisplayPort inputs the system associates with a given Thunderbolt controller.
A community-posted IORegistry example from an M4 machine showed three Thunderbolt controllers (one per port), each with two `AppleThunderboltDPInAdapterOS2` entries — two observed adapter entries per controller, which one poster described as "expected" for that generation.
A dump posted from an Apple demo 16-inch M5 Max showed four per controller.
To be clear: this is community-observed system data, not Apple documentation, and we're treating it as a clue rather than a specification.

That's a hypothesis, not a confirmed Apple architecture statement. For the M5 Pro, the three-display-per-port behavior is consistent with the same model, but we have not found an equivalent public IORegistry sample that directly confirms a three-input arrangement. So we say the M5 Pro is "consistent with" that explanation, not "proven to have" three inputs.
Why this is not "just Thunderbolt 5"
Intel's Thunderbolt 5 launch materials highlight three 4K@144Hz displays as a reference capability. That's useful ecosystem context, but it isn't a normative ceiling for every Thunderbolt 5 host. Apple's own documentation shows the M5 Max supporting four displays over one Thunderbolt port. The safer takeaway is that Thunderbolt generation alone doesn't determine a Mac's display count; the host implementation matters too. M4 Pro/Max and M5 Pro/Max all advertise Thunderbolt 5 at up to 120Gb/s, yet Apple documents different per-port display limits.
More displays per port don't mean unlimited display modes
Raising the per-port count doesn't mean you can attach any four monitors at any resolution or refresh rate. Apple documents separate limits for display count and for the display-mode combinations supported at the same time.
One constraint is how many independent displays Apple supports over the connection. Another is which combinations of resolution and refresh rate Apple supports at the same time. Apple publishes those combinations, but it doesn't identify a single internal resource as the limiting factor.

What the new limit does — and doesn't — mean for docks
This is where the change matters for the hardware you actually buy.
Mac total ceiling vs single-port ceiling vs dock routing ceiling
There are three different limits in play, and a dock sits at the third one:
Mac total ceiling — how many displays your chip can drive (M5 Pro = 3, M5 Max = 4).
Single-port ceiling — how many can travel through one Thunderbolt port (now 3 or 4 on M5).
Dock routing ceiling — how the dock itself is wired to the host and how it exposes its own display outputs.
M5 Pro raises both ceilings compared with M4 Pro: from two to three displays in total and from two to three over one Thunderbolt port. M5 Max is different: its total ceiling stays at four, but its single-port ceiling rises from two to four. Neither change automatically turns every dock into a one-cable, four-display dock. A dock still has to route the supported displays through its own host connection.
Single-host, dual-host, and daisy-chain topologies are not interchangeable
This is the part that trips people up. "The Mac can do four displays over one port" is not the same as "this specific dock does four displays over one cable."
FusionDock models are useful examples because they show why the three limits need to be evaluated separately.
FusionDock Max 2 uses a dual USB-C host connection. On an M5 Pro it supports three displays through three downstream USB-C ports (or two USB-C plus HDMI). On an M5 Max it supports four displays through three USB-C plus HDMI, or a supported daisy-chain configuration. Because Max 2 uses two host connections, it should not be treated as an example of a four-display single-cable dock. Its final display capability depends on both the Mac's native display support and the dock's own routing design.
FusionDock Ultra is the higher-expansion option: four displays on M5 Max, three on M5 Pro, plus 10GbE and 26 ports. It makes more sense when your setup also needs that level of expansion — but if three displays is your end state, it's usually more than you need.
FusionDock Pro 3 is the other direction: a single-upstream Thunderbolt 5 dock that tops out at dual 6K60. If you only need two displays, you don't need a four-display dock at all.

Do you still need DisplayLink?
M5 Pro: no for up to three native external displays
If your M5 Pro needs three displays or fewer, you can do it natively. No DisplayLink, no software-assisted graphics.
M5 Max: no for up to four native external displays
Same story, up to four. Native display output handles it.
Beyond the native ceiling: software-assisted USB graphics may be considered
The exception is when you need more displays than your Mac supports natively. A base M1/M2 Mac still has a one-display native ceiling, and an M5 Pro can't natively reach a fourth screen. In those cases, software-assisted USB graphics such as DisplayLink is one option. That's outside FusionDock's current native product scope, so we won't pretend otherwise — but it's the one situation where "native dock" isn't the answer.
