A common mistake is to look only at the charger's or dock's wattage.

What does "Apple's 140W fast-charge path" actually mean?
"140W fast-charge path" is useful shorthand, but it can sound more mysterious than it is.

For the 16-inch MacBook Pro, Apple says fast charging can take the battery to up to 50% in around 30 minutes under its test conditions.

Why can newer models do 140W over USB-C while older ones cannot?
The important point is that 140W over USB-C is not just "more of the same" 96W or 100W charging.
At the USB standard level, power above 100W requires a newer high-power USB Power Delivery mode. USB-IF's USB PD 3.1 specification added Extended Power Range (EPR) and new fixed voltages, including 28V, which enables power levels up to 140W.
So, in simple terms:
A charger or dock must support the higher-power mode. The cable must support it. And the Mac's charging input must also support negotiating and accepting it.

Why does Apple specify a 240W USB-C cable for a 140W charge?
This sounds confusing at first: if the Mac only needs up to 140W, why use a cable labeled 240W?
Because 240W is the cable's maximum power rating, not the amount the Mac is forced to consume.
The cable is designed for USB PD Extended Power Range, which covers higher-power USB-C charging. The Mac and power source still negotiate the actual power needed.

Does a 140W dock constantly push 140W into the Mac?
No.
140W is the maximum available charging power for a compatible setup, not a constant power level from 0% to 100%.
USB Power Delivery is negotiated between the power source and the Mac. The Mac decides how much power to request, and charging power changes throughout the charge cycle.

So is 96W actually enough for a 16-inch MacBook Pro?
For many users, yes.
Apple states that a USB-C Mac can charge from a USB-C power source that provides more or less wattage than the recommended adapter, as long as it supports USB Power Delivery.
That means a 96W dock is not "incompatible" with a 16-inch MacBook Pro.

One important clarification:
Thunderbolt generation does not determine charging wattage.

Apple lists lower-power fast-charge combinations for smaller Macs:
